Moving beyond mentoring :a collective case study examining the perceived characteristics of transformational figures /by Brent W. Bean.

The purpose of this collective-case study was to explore the characteristics of transformational figures as perceived by the participants of this study. The participants of this study were purposely selected because they identified an epochal change in their life as a result of their interpersonal encounter with another person. This was an integrated study, as it incorporated findings from my own transformational experience.;The lessons learned in this study are the result of the data that was collected from the individual and collective-case analysis. The study participants were interviewed and their narratives were transcribed and coded in order to reveal the perceived characteristics of their transformational figures. The study participants were asked to verify the accuracy of these narratives.;This study revealed that interpersonal encounters were seen as a catalyst that assisted the study participants through the process of transformation. The qualities of kindness, caring, compassion, empathy, understanding, honesty, trust, knowledge and enthusiasm were identified as crucial in the process of creating a relationship of hope.;This study also introduced the idea of a model of hope that helped to facilitate transformation by increasing the self-efficacy and self-esteem of the protege. Efficacy, the I Can, and self-esteem the I Am, work in conjunction to create opportunities for self-reflection. Self-reflection and increased confidence in the value and capacity of the protege lead to the I Will or an increased hope in the protege.;This study also suggests the need for continued mentoring research. The traditional view of mentoring suggests a one-on-one relationship between mentor and protege. Although one-on-one relationships are important in mentoring, this study spoke of the importance of a pool of mentors, or multiple interpersonal encounters in the lives of proteges.;This study also recognizes the limitations inherent in this process. An attempt to establish trustworthiness was followed throughout the study. However, acknowledgment of limitations and recommendations for further studies are critical in advancing the theories of transformation.Thesis (Ph. D., Education)--University of Idaho, April 15, 2010
