The article defines the concept and the conditions for sustainable development of regional economy, the role of state regulation in this process, reveals challenges of sustainable development of the regional economy in the current conditions of Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), necessary conditions for its ensuring are defined, the main directions of the regional economic policy which conduce to improve the sustainability of the regional economic development, are developed, government regulation tools are recommended
