Some factors influencing drift and benthic insects in the littoral zone of riffles were studied the summer and fall of 1971 and 1972 in the Clearwater River in north Idaho. Benthic samples were taken at three water depths (15, 30, and 45 2 2 cm) using a .093 m (1 ft ) Hess bottom sampler. Insect drift was taken on riffles at three distances from the shoreline in water depths of 30, 2 2 45 and 60 cm.
