Relation between Sight-Reading Ability and Music Dictation Ability

The purpose of this study was to clear the relation between sight-reading ability and music dictation ability. Piano majors (N=23) served as participants. The investigation was constructed from two parts. In the first part, participants played 8 music excerpts on the piano to judge their abilities of sight-reading as expert or non-expert. In the second part, participants were tested their music listening abilities with music dictation tests, including a single melody, great staff, and four parts.
