Suicide as the act of self-determination of the human and the factors determining it

The paper analyses the phenomenon of suicide as a result of personal self-determination. Suicide is an important phenomenon in economic, social and existential sense. As suicide is among the main causes of deaths in the world, with Lithuania leading the list in this area in Europe, it is essential to analyze the reasons, the future trends and possible changes of this phenomenon in order to take appropriate measures to reduce the number of suicides. Even though the statistics of suicides is an objective index testifying the general state of mind of the society, the analysis of demographic data is insufficient to perceive the deep causes of this phenomenon. Demographic data fail to reveal the factors determining suicide and serve only as a starting point in suicide prevention. The analysis of suicides in Lithuania leads to the suggestion that they are not determined by objective reasons alone. The paper stresses that in seeking positive changes, the analysis of objective factors influencing suicide is to be supplemented by comprehensive research into subjective circumstances stimulating suicidal intentions and inner attitudes of the human leading to such decision.Straipsnyje analizuojamas savižudybės fenomenas kaip asmeninio žmogaus apsisprendimo išdava. Savižudybėms esant viena iš pagrindinių mirties priežasčių pasaulyje, o Lietuvai pirmaujant šioje srityje nepaprastai aktualu aiškintis šio reiškinio priežastis, paplitimo tendencijas bei jų pokyčius. Savižudybių statistika yra objektyvus rodiklis, liudijantis bendrą visuomenės psichologinės būklės lygį, bet demografinių duomenų analizės nepakanka siekiant suvokti gilumines šio reiškinio priežastis.
