Often a school principal is imagined as the school administrator having to perform certain managerial functions; however, such functions of a school principal are not enough in order to successfully manage a modern school. Today it is expedient that a school principal will be not only a good administrator but also the leader of the school community conscripting the school community for corporate activity and becoming the example for the young generation educated at the school. The article pursues to answer the following problematic questions: why is the leadership important for a school principal, how do activities of a school principal change when he becomes a leader and what current requirements can be formulated for a school principal as leader competence? The scientific problem is pursued to solve in three parts of the article. The first part analyses the conception of leadership and the evolution of leadership theories; the second part analyses activities of a school principal as manager, as leader and as transformational leader; the third part discloses the importance of school principal's leadership for school development as well as it distinguishes the requirements for the competence of a school principal as leade
