Education system is conservative enough. However, different changes that are related to a teacher or influence his work take place constantly. Changing political requirements for teacher‘s work, changing viewpoing of society to school and teacher‘s role in it, changing expectations of learners determine that a teacher‘s role as well as requirements for teacher‘s competence are formulated in the world practice in the context of contemporary changes and how do they reflect in the legal basis of Lithuania that regulates teacher‘s competencies? The article consists of three parts: the first part analyses the conception of competence, the second part reviews the requirements for teacher‘s competence formulated in the world practice in the context of changes in education; the third part analyses the legal basis of Lithuania that regulates teacher‘s competences, distiguishes the set requirements for modern competence of Lithuanian teachers
