The aim of the article is to review the evolution of performance measurement systems over the past few decades, and analyse the strengths and shortcomings of contemporary performance measurement systems. The article examines the similarities and differences of performance measurement in public and private sectors. The experience gained in quality management and process improvement systems could be transferred to performance measurement systems.
