Mykolas Lietuvis ir Simonas Daukantas: saiko dorybė

The article aims at questioning the inertness of the tradition of interpretation, according to which Simonas Daukantas’s historical narrative is related only to the Age of Enlightenment. Secondly, the article attempts to identify how Mykolas Lietuvis’s text "De Moribus Tartarorum et Moschorum, Fragmina X, multiplici historia referta" ("On Traditions of Tatars, Lithuanians and Muscovites”) of the Renaissance Latin culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of the 16th century is specifically employed in Daukantas's historio-philosophical narrative of the 19th century and what is the inter-text dialogue between the cultures, sensing the statehood tradition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, based by the concept of a temperate lifestyle and creating different political identities. The article, when discussing the antique tradition of comprehension of the virtue of temperance and analyzing its different forms of manifestation in the cultural texts by Lietuvis and Daukantas, also refers to the study by Marcelinas Ročka, the valuable insights of which encouraged to think over the fate of the Renaissance Lithuanian historiography in Daukantas’s historical oeuvre one more time. When discussing the relation of continuation of cultural traditions in Daukantas’s historiography, Andrius Volanas’s publicist study "De Libertate Politika Sive Civili" (1572; "On the Political and Civil Liberty”) is also referred to as the cultural context of the Lithuanian Renaissance, in which, as in Lietuvis’s "Papročiai", the analogical ways of reformation of the social life in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are dominating. Third, Daukantas was nurtured in the Age of Enlightenment, which was based by the ideology of the Renaissance culture therefore the article also examines the historiosophical concept by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which is close to Daukantas’s historical prose
