International legal provisions in the area of electronic information security : accommodation in Lithuania

The safety of information technologies is the main factor allowing the coordination of the use of information technologies in the public and private sectors in Lithuania. Today, when the majority of the society is more or less dependent on the smooth operation of information systems and their services, the safety requirements become the most important. Intangible information has become a value of its own and its protection receives increasing attention. Active spread of new information technologies in the area of information has some negative consequences as well, such as cybercrimes. The protection of information, especially economic information, is a very important and specialised type of activity, which must also be subject to consistent and thorough legal regulation. The protection of information systems must be coordinated with the principles of the legitimate access to information and the free movement of data in democratic societies. The existing legal documents should not limit the legitimate interests of right-holders or interrupt the normal work of information systems. Every state is responsible for establishing such requirements and ensuring their proper application. The study examines the legal provision of international (regional) coordination documents and the legal documents of the European Union and other development states, as well as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that have direct relevance to the issues of the legal regulation of the protection of information systems and information safety. The article also analyses the legal base in this area in the Republic of Lithuania, as well as the issues of practical implementation
