Papiškės 4th peat settlement site

The article analyzes the 4th moor settlement of Papiškės referring to the materials of the excavations, performed in 1989 - 1991. This is one of the few monuments of the Southern Lithuania, whose cultural layer is covered with a layer of preserving peat, allowing for obtaining more informative data from the sandy settlements, characteristic of the region and is the only archeologically excavated monument in the area of the upper Vokė. The natural conditions that existed in the area, i. e. the fishy Papis lake and the flint resources created favourable conditions for settling of the people of the Stone Age. The campsites could have been both seasonal and transit. In the 4th settlement of Papiškės materials, characteristic of different periods were found. The campsites of the Mesolithic period were not frequent in the settlement. A relatively larger aggregation of findings, attributed to the Pulli techno-complex of the early Mesolith stands out. A campsite of the late Mesolith was discovered. The most significant materials of the studies of the said monument are related to the last period of inhabitation, related with the flint processing industry, supplementing the picture of the late culture of Narva. In terms of traditions of production the findings of the Papiškės settlement are different from the monuments of the Southern Lithuania
