Authorship of the frescoes in st. Peter and Paul's church in Antakalnis

Today most masters, who created and decorated the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Antakalnis in the second half of the 17th century are already known. However the issue of the identity of the author of the mural paintings is still under discussion. Traditionally two hypotheses of the authorship of the mural paintings have entrenched in the historiography until present. Already in the 19th century there was the hypothesis that the author could have been Italian master Martino Altomonte. At the beginning of the 20th century the opinion that the author was the Florence master Michelangelo Palloni was formulated and in the second half of the 20th century the opinion already became widely popular. The article summarizes the dissemination of the hypotheses in historiography, the hypotheses receive certain criticism. With the help of the analysis of the sources and the style of painting another version of potential authorship is presented. The article argues that the author of the mural paintings, made in the eighties of the 17th century in Antakalnis could have been a well-known Vilnius painter Johann Gottfried Berckhoff
