On the accentuation of the verbal suffix -auti in the general Lithuanian language

The verbal suffix -auti is not accentually steady in the general Lithuanian language. The concrete accentuation type (radical or suffixal) is determined by various phonetic, morphophonological, semantic, and compositional factors. The majority of these verbs have the accent on the suffix. Almost all verbs having the suffix -auti and made from nominals are accentuated in this way. The radical accent is typical of derivatives made from the verbal suffix -auti. The acute metatony that appears regarding the peculiarities of derivational semantics is characteristic of the radical accentuation verbs. In the general Lithuanian language, there are verbs of unstable accentuation; in dictionaries, both accentuation variants (radical and suffixal) are traced. In 2005, the Lithuanian Language Commission, taking into consideration the requirements of systematicity and tendencies of the real usage, adjusted the accentuation norms of some -auti verbs
