The Issue of the Normativity of Meaning in Analytic Philosophy of Language. Debate of Kripke’s Thesis

Kripke w swojej słynnej książce Wittgenstein o regułach i języku prywatnym postawił tezę, że znaczenie jest istotnie normatywne (tj. posiadanie przez dane wyrażenie znaczenia jest nierozerwalnie związane z obowiązywaniem pewnych norm). Tradycyjnie interpretowaną tę tezę w sposób preskryptywny. Uważano, iż z faktu, że dane wyrażenie coś znaczy wynika wprost jak należy go używać. Takie podejście owocowało licznymi niedogodnościami, jak np. zakaz stosowania metafor czy ironii. W niniejszej pracy stawiana jest teza, iż najlepszym sposobem by ocalić tezę o normatywności znaczenia (postrzeganą jako przed-teoretyczny warunek adekwatności dla teorii znaczenia) jest radykalna zmiana perspektywy, mianowicie przyjęcie, iż dane wyrażenie posiada znaczenie, o ile obowiązują pewne reguły jego użycia. Przyjęte w niniejszej pracy rozwiązanie oparte jest o modyfikację koncepcji reguł konstytutywnych J. Searle’a.S. Kripke in his famous book entitled Wittgenstein on rules and private language has expressed the idea that meaning is essentially normative (any expression possesses meaning if and only if there are some rules/norms in force). Traditionally the normativity thesis was regarded as prescriptive. To say that meaning is prescriptive is to say that from mere fact that some expression possesses meaning it entails that speaker ought to use it in certain way. But such account encountered many difficulties including bizarre obligation not to make metaphor or use the language ironically. In my dissertation I argue that the best way to save the normativity thesis, which is considered as pre-theoretical constraint put in front of any theory of meaning, is to radically change perspective. I argue that we should accept the claim that linguistic expression possesses meaning due to the rules of correct use that are in force for language speakers. My idea is based on modification of Searle’s constitutive rules
