The Narrative of Rodrigo Rey Rosa and the Clues to Violence

Rodrigo Rey Rosa (Guatemala, 1958) has written some stories and novels that have earned an important place in literature not only in his country but also in Latin America and Spain. His work reveals disparate faces of violence. In many cases, this violence is not only a mechanism to illustrate the scope of evil, but also what is worse, its persistence and ways of sophistication. From the discourse analysis of his works such as Ningún lugar sagrado (1998), Piedras encantadas (2001), Caballeriza (2006), Otro zoo (2007) and El material humano (2009), in this article we present some elements that would make possible to determine a “typology” of violence: a) the determinants of the culture of violence, b) declarative elements that articulate his discourse; c) the subjects of violence: officials, adventurers, criminals, rogues, rascals d) forms of violence: political, institutional, kidnapping, weapons, drugs (trade and consume), bad management of information and traffic of influences, among others. The result will be an analysis that may let us understand the argument levels about violence, one of the most significant recurrences in the Guatemalan author\u27s narrative.特集 ラテン文学論
