Autorska technika polega na analizie zależności abundancji jonów na widmie mas (I) od wartości napięcia stożkowego (Vc), wytypowaniu punktów na tej zależności charakterystycznych dla każdego jonu – Vc,Imax (Vc = Vc,Imax przy I = Imax), Vc,dec (Vc rozpoczęcia rozpadu jonu) oraz Vc,0 (Vc rozpoczęcia obserwacji jonu potomnego na widmie mas).
