40. Fracture Systems developed on the Island, Awa-shima, near the Epicenter of the Niigata Earthquake in 1964

On June 16, a destructive earthquake occurred off the coast of Niigata. The epicenter was located on the spot about 10km off the southwest of a small island, Awashima. The magnitude was estimated as 7.5 (±0.2), causing serious damage on a wide area of the northern half of Niigata Prefecture and the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture. The earthquake was named after the town of Niigata City which suffered by destructive damage, especially on land consisting of soft ground, despite the distance beine about 40km from the eoicenter
