The man.d.ala theory of the later phase of Tantric Buddhism was established in the Guhyasamāja-tantra, and there are two schools of interpretation regarding this tantra, namely, the Ārya school and the Jñānapāda school. The original Sanskrit texts of almost all the basic works of the Ārya school have been discovered, and critical editions of the majority of these have also been published. In contrast, no Sanskrit manuscript of the Samantabhadra nāme sādhana, the basic text on the utpatti-krama of the Jñānapāda school, had previously been known to exist.
