De novo cholesterol synthesis in situ and a cellular uptake of lipoproteins through native LDL-receptor mediated pathway provide the cellular cholesterol of most mammalian tissues. Scavenger receptors having a high affinity for the modified LDL are recently established in macrophages. Strong evidence suggests that scavenger receptors function in the formation of foaming cell on the atherosclerotic lesions
