The chronological changes of numbers and quality of operated patients with cancer were caused by changes of environment and progress of diagnostic techniques in recent years. The main reason of the changes of the environment resulted from the change in dietary habits and trend towards aged society. The number of operated patients with gastric cancer increased from 1273 to 2476 in 15 years (1972~1987) in Niigata Prefecture. And those with early gastric cancer increased from 138 to 1100 in same period. The increase of operated patients with gastric cancer resulted from two factors, which were the increase of aged patients with gastric cancer and of patients with early gastric cancer.
