Inaccurate taxonomic assessment of threatened populations can hinder conservation prioritisation and management, with human-mediated population movements obscuring biogeographic patterns and confounding reconstructions of evolutionary history. Giant salamanders were formerly distributed widely across China, and are interpreted as a single species, Andrias davidianus.
