This work investigates the possibility to employ functional inorganic nano building blocks as cross-linking agents for self-healing materials. Smart polymers and composites using reversible Diels-Alder reaction as mechanism for intrinsic self-healing of defects represent a novel class of materials. Maleimide and furan functionalities have been selected to ensure Diels-Alder reaction between inorganic nanoparticles and polymeric matrix.
