RuAl shows a high melting point, good ductility at room temperature and excellent oxidation resistance due to the growth of a protective α-Al2O3 layer with similar thermal expansion, increasing its adherence. RuAl is thus a promising protective coating material oxidising high-temperature environments, yet this has yet to be thoroughly studied. RuAl thin films on stainless steel (SS) are produced from magnetron sputtered multilayers (periods of 3 nm). Since bulk and thin film properties often differ, thermal stability, grain growth, oxidation and substrate interaction were studied at different temperatures.
