Z.B. erlauben Polymerkomposite, bei denen Mikro- oder Nanoteilchen in der Polymermatrix dispergiert werden, die guten mechanischen Eigenschaften des Polymers mit den dielektrischen oder den magnetischen Eigenschaften der Teilchen zu kombinieren. Die effektiven Eigenschaften solcher heterogenen Medien hängen nicht nur von den Komponenten und deren Konzentration ab, sondern auch von der unbekannten Mikrostruktur.
