Die nicht proteinogene Aminosäure Nicotianamin (NA) ist ein in höheren Pflanzen ubiquitärer und essentieller Chelator von Schwermetallen. In Gramineen fungiert NA als direkte biochemische Vorstufe in der Synthese der Phytosiderophore und ist damit indirekt an der Aufnahme von Fe und Zn in die Wurzel beteiligt. Wie die NA freie, semi-sterile Tomatenmutante chloronerva zeigt, erfüllt NA auch in Nicht-Gramineen eine essentielle Funktion, die bislang jedoch nicht genau verstanden ist.
