Membrane fouling by surfactants : methods for characterizing membrane fouling by surfactants and their application for suitable membrane selection

Zusammenfassung Tenside in Prozess- und Abwässern können erhebliche Probleme verursachen, wenn sie mittels Membranfiltration behandelt werden. Durch die spezifischen Eigenschaften der Tenside, wie z.B. Mizellbildung und Grenzflächenadsorption ist deren quantitatives Abtrennen ausgesprochen schwierig. Adsorbieren die Tenside auf der Membranoberfläche oder in deren Poren, ändern sich die Filtrations- und Trenneigenschaften — es kommt zum Fouling. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Methoden zur Charakterisierung des Fouling von Membranen durch Tenside zu untersuchen. Dabei sollen sowohl die Filtrations- als auch die Oberflächeneigenschaften der Membran genauer betrachtet werden, da nur deren Kombination eine Aussage über Ursache und Auswirkung des Fouling zulassen. Bei Kenntnis der vorhandenen Tenside und des Adsorptionsmechanismus kann mit Hilfe dieser Charakterisierungsdaten die am besten geeignete Membran ermittelt bzw. ein Konditionierungs- / Reinigungsverfahren für die Membran entwickelt werden. Untersuchungen mit Modelltensiden zeigen die grundlegenden Reaktionen und Folgen für die Filtrations- und Oberflächeneigenschaften keramischer und polymerer Membranmaterialien. Der direkte Zusammenhang zwischen Adsorptionsmechanismus und veränderten Membraneigenschaften wird dargestellt. Am Beispiel einer Abwasserbehandlung für die Schwermetallanalytik werden Membranauswahl und Konditionierung anhand der Charakterisierungsdaten für einen Anwendungsfall beschrieben und der erfolgreiche Einsatz nachgewiesen.Abstract Surfactants in process and waste water can cause serious problems, if they are treated with membrane filtration. Due to the specific properties of surfactants, e.g. micelle formation and interface adsorption, their quantitative separation is complicated. As soon as surfactants adsorb onto the membrane surface or into its pores the filtration and separation properties change — fouling will occur. The intention of this scientific work is to examine methods for characterizing membrane fouling by surfactants. Therefore, filtration as well as surface properties of the membrane are surveyed, because this combination makes a conclusion concerning reasons and effects of fouling possible. In case the present surfactants and their mechanisms of adsorption are known, these methods of characterization facilitate the ultimate membrane selection and their efficient conditioning and cleaning. Experiments with technically pure surfactants demonstrate basic reactions and consequences for filtration and surface properties of ceramic and polymeric membrane material. The straight relationship between adsorption mechanism and modified properties is visualised as well as the successful application of the characterization data to membrane selection and conditioning is proved with the help of the example of a developed waste water treatment plant for heavy metal analysis
