Blandstaden och störande verksamheter : Utveckling av blandstadskonceptet

The mixed city is an expression that today is used frequently by Swedish city planners. It is part of a vision about returning life to the cities. However, one of the major obstacles for the realisation of the mixed city are safety distances to noisy and disturbing workplaces. The intention of this masters thesis is to study if, and subsequently how, these functions can be part of the city or whether they should be located to the city fringes. The thesis starts off by studying literature about the planning history of Sweden from the early 19th century to the planning of today. The chapter ends by presenting the guidelines that regulates planning of noisy and disturbing workplaces today. This is intended to provide an understanding as to why the city´s workplaces are situated where they are.Following this, the mixed city concept is studied, and its history and expression presented. The literature study ends by by identifying the advantages and disadvantages of combining noisy and disturbing workplaces with housing. The results point to a lot of benefits, but there are also some serious disadvantages to deal with. One of the most important advantages is to make the everyday activities for the citizens, while the biggest disadvantage is the higher amount of heavy traffic close to residences. To show how these theories can be realised, an area of central Gothenburg was examined as a case study. The chosen district was Ringön, a central employment area with a significant number of workplaces that can give rise to disturbance. Ringöns potential as a mixed are of the city was studied by interviewing Bo Aronsson at Centrala Älvstaden and Roger Strömberg at BRG and also through a survey of business owners in Ringön. The results identify the opportunities and challenges of achieving a mixed city in Ringön, and combining this with disturbing workplaces. Ringöns greatest opportunity to make this work is its close proximity to the central parts of Gothenburg and other parts of Hisingen. The largest obstacle to overcome is the barriers that isolate Ringön.
