A domesticated vampire : how the vampire myth has changed since Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight

Since the beginning of recorded history, there have been stories told about vicious vampires. Bram Stoker’s renowned novel Dracula was published in 1897, and since then the myth about vampires has evolved and changed. This essay examines how the vampire myth has changed from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight. To be able to see whether there are any differences three novels have been analysed: Dracula by Bram Stoker, Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, and Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. It was discovered that while Dracula has a secure ground in folklore, Anne Rice’s vampires are more eager to discuss moral questions, and Stephenie Meyer’s vampires have integrated with society. In the discussion the prominent characters from each novel were compared to each other, and a conclusion could be drawn that most vampires have indeed become domesticated and that the vampire myth has changed.Validerat; 20101217 (root
