This thesis aims to explore how to use glass as a load-bearing structural material in building construction. The use of glass has increased dramatically over the past 50 years as a new production method which have made it easier and cheaper to manufacture.In order to ensure safety, safety glass can be used. Safety glass is toughened or laminated and when it brakes, shards will not occur. Glass can handle pressure forces well. It has not managed to collateral how much it can handle because the glass always brakes due of tension. The tensile strength of glass is in the range of 45 to 120 MPa.Connection details are very important to take into account when buildings are made of glass. For when connections are made, the stress concentrations occur. This can be avoided by a soft layer used between the steel and glass. The resistance of the glass is calculated according to the draft Eurocode as well as a publication from Denmark called SBi 215. Comparison of these calculations is published in this report.A design of a glass building follows and the object is an extension to the Cathedral of Trinity (Trefaldighetskirken) in Oslo. This is made to check whether the information is sufficient to design a building. The stabilizing system in the building is made by beam-column and shear wall. More research is needed to make the glass a more attractive material.
