This paper situates the radical roots of Student as Producer in Marxist revolutionary science. The paper argues that the democratisation of science, grounded in a project to produce a new form of social value, or commonwealth, provides a way of countering the devastatingly destructive consequences of capitalism. The paper concludes with a reworking of the famous dictum: not socialism or barbarism, but communism or extinction
