We have developed 10 microsatellite markers for typing Toxoplasma gondii isolates. Five have a very high discrimination capacity allowing fingerprinting of isolates during epidemics or detection of mixed infections caused by two genetically similar strains. The other five less polymorphic markers were used as a multiplex technique to typify a large number of isolates collected at the Toxoplasma Biological Resource Center. We have shown with these markers and with a diversified sampling that the T. Gondii population structure was complex associating a clonal structure in France that the environment is domestic or wild and a greater genotypic diversity associated with a higher frequency genetic recombination in Brazil or in the Amazonian fore...
