Awakening the Potentials of Tampere City Center: New Paths New Edges

This thesis aims to investigate today’s urban space which is significantly shaped by the interactions of the people with their environments. Today’s cities require a deeper way of understanding of how people interact with the city and with each other. In this context, Tampere city center is analyzed in the perspective of the interactions and the ways of increasing the encounters in urban spaces are investigated. After a comprehensive background research, the study focuses on the analysis method which consists of different layers of information of the city center such as the memory of the city and the definition of the social groups at the city center. The analysis leads to the synthesis and the discovery of the superimposing method and determines the intervention areas. Finally, the interventions, which aim to show a vision to integrate the people into the undiscovered areas of the city center, are proposed.Tämä diplomityö tutkii ihmisen ja ympäristön vuorovaikutuksen muovaamaa nykyaikaista kaupunkitilaa. Nykyaikaiset kaupungit edellyttävät erityistä tapa ymmärtää, miten kaupunkilaiset ovat vuorovaikutuksessa kaupungin ja toistensa kanssa. Työssä analysoidaan Tampereen keskustan aluetta vuorovaikutuksen näkökulmasta. Lisäksi työssä tutkitaan keinoja lisätä kaupunkitilassa tapahtuvia kohtaamisia. Analyysi perustuu kattavaan taustatutkimukseen, joka käsittelee kaupungin kerrostuneisuutta esimerkiksi erilaisten sosiaalisten nähkökulmien ja urbaanien muistijälkien kautta. Synteesi, sekä limittäisen tarkastelun metodi (”superimposing”) määrittävät analyysin tuloksena kehitettyä Tampereen keskustan kehityssuunnitelmaa. Lopuksi ehdotetaan interventioita, jossa arkkitehtonisten interventioiden avulla keskustan kätketyt helmet saatetaan kaupunkilaisten aktiiviseen käyttöön
