The formation of an adherent layer of inorganic deposition on the surfaces of process equipment is called scaling. Scaling is a major problem in many industries using large quantities of water. One of these industries is the paper making industry and the most common scale forming compound is calcium carbonate. The scaling problem in the paper making industry can be eased or in the best case completely solved by the use of chemical additives referred to as antiscalants or scale inhibitors. The most common an-tiscalant compounds are phosphonates and polycarboxylates.
