In my study I concentrate on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s journalistic texts, and primarily on feuilletons, reviews and short press releases. The article offers a functional and semantic analysis of the proverbs found in these writings. It also examines the idea of the proverb as a genre which was adapted to the structure of another generic model. The largest number of proverbs (ca. 70) can be found in Sienkiewicz’s feuilletons and feuilleton reviews, where they serve satirical and comic purposes and also have a cohesive function (as connecting links between neighboring themes).
