EFFECTIVE TEACHER TALK IN EFL CLASSROOM INTERACTION AND ITS PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATION (A Positive Case Study at a Senior High School in Makassar)

Abstract: Teacher talk is a simple language that is used by the teacher in teaching and learning process. It has an important role not only in organizing the classroom but also in acquiring the target language. The quality of the teacher can be measured by their talk in the classroom. Regarding to this, the aims of this study are to analyze the types, the talk time, and the pedagogical goals of teacher talk used by the effective teacher in EFL classroom. This research applied positive case study and was analyzed through discourse analysis. The subjects of this study were two effective English teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Makassar which are chosen based on the student’s perception. The results of this study revealed that 1) there were two types of teacher talk. They are management talk with14 language functions and instructional talk with 6 language function.; 2) The effective teachers spend 53.22% and 52.12% to use instructional talk with target language as the dominant language use while 46.78% and 47.88% of total time to use management talk with native language as the dominant language use; and 3) there were 5 pedagogical goals of management talk and 11 pedagogical goals of instructional talk. Furthermore, it can be concluded that effective teacher is the teacher who can use their talk not only to transfer the material but also manage students’ behavior and their time in teaching and learning process without reducing the student potential.
