To achieve a sand filter design that reduce its pressure loss, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tecnique was used combined with laboratory tests in a scaled filter using different filter media. The CFD models allowed to identify those key points that allowed to reduce pressure drop. Thus, different underdrain designs were developed and computed. A prototype at the laboratory scale was manufactured from the digital filter model that offered a smaller pressure drop to verify its performance. The new design reduced the pressure drop across the whole of the filter by 30% at a surface filtration rate of 0.015 m/s and with a porous medium formed by silica sand with a size ranging from 0.63 to 0.75 mm.
