Pose estimation has been studied since the early days of computer vision. The task of object pose estimation is to determine the transformation that maps an object from it's inherent coordinate system into the camera-centric coordinate system. This transformation describes the translation of the object relative to the camera and the orientation of the object in three dimensional space. The knowledge of an object's pose is a key ingredient in many application scenarios like robotic grasping, augmented reality, autonomous navigation and surveillance.
