Usage of biological markers in fresh-dairy cattle clinical mastitis and endometritis diagnostics and treatment efficiency evaluation

Research aim and objectives: to determine and evaluate the usage of specific biomarkers in fresh-dairy cattle clinical mastitis and endometritis diagnostics and treatment efficiency. Objectives of the study: 1. To diagnose the most common diseases of fresh-dairy cows in the farm; 2. To evaluate the significance of biomarkers in clinical mastitis, endometritis diagnostics; 3. To evaluate the changes of biomarkers during clinical mastitis and clinical endometritis treatment period. 4. Provide recommendations for clinical mastitis and endometritis diagnostics and treatment schemes application. Materials and methods: According to clinical signs, the most commonly occurring diseases were identified among 116 fresh-dairy cows. Chosen cows were calved during one month period. Subsequently, in analogy with the clinical features of the diseases, 3 groups were formed. Group 1 - control (n = 10), group 2 - clinical mastitis (n = 10), group 3 - clinical endometritis (n = 10). Cows with clinical signs of mastitis were divided into two groups according to the applied treatment schemes. Scheme 1 – Multiject IMM (n = 5), scheme 2 – Synulox LC (n = 5). Using the computerized herd management program, we collected biomarkers data for each cow among the 30 selected. Milk output (kg / d), electrical milk conductivity (mS / cm), animal activity (count / hour) – were recorded 5 days before and 7 days after diagnosis. The monthly control results of milk were analyzed: the number of somatic cells in milk (thsd / ml), the protein fat ratio (R: B), and the monthly average of milk flow rate (kg / min). Body mass index was evaluated from 1 to 5 by Ferguson et al Results: 1. The most commonly diagnosed fresh-dairy cattle diseases in the X farm were: mastitis - 24%, endometritis - 11%, failure to release the placenta - 4%; 2. A decrease in the milk production (16.21%) and activity (16.29%) associated with elevated milk conduction (11.17%) are important indicators in the diagnosis of early clinical mastitis. The occurrence of clinical mastitis reflects decreased milking flow rate of 56.84%. and 1275.94%. increasing somatic cell count. At two days before clinical endometritis diagnose, activity was reduced by 10.6%. 3. In biomarkers evaluation, the second treatment scheme was more effective. Cows treated with amoxicillin, clavulanic acid and prednisolone gave 3.53%. more milk, were 3.72%. more active and their milk electrical conductivity were 4,12%. lower compared to the first treatment scheme cured cattle; 4. In order to diagnose the clinical mastitis as early as possible, it is necessary to analyze biomarkers of the computerized herd management program, such as: electrical milk conductivity, amount of produced milk, activity, somatic cell count and milking flow rate. As an additional indicator of clinical endometritis can be used decreased activity. Apply a second treatment scheme including amoxicillin with clavulanic acid and prednisolone.
