Campylobacter spp., mainly C. jejuni, are the main cause of foodborne gastroenteritis in humans, with poultry meat being the major source of infection by this microorganism. Antimicrobial resistance raises global concerns, and according the World Health Organization C. jejuni is a high-risk pathogen because of its resistance to fluoroquinolones.
