Factors influencing employee engagement of engineers in a South African petrochemical organisation

(Business Management)Abstract: An engaged workforce offers significant business outcomes for an organisation in terms of talent retention, improved productivity and safety, customer satisfaction and retention, as well as improved financial outcomes like revenue growth and total shareholder return. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing the employee engagement of engineers in a South African Petrochemical organisation. As an empirical study, the research was conducted amongst engineers in one of the organisations regional operating hubs by using the survey methodology. The questionnaire administered assessed the level of engagement as well as seven factors or drivers of engagement. The job demands and resources of growth opportunities, advancement, organisational support, overload and job insecurity were assessed together with the psychological conditions of meaningfulness and psychological safety. The study found that the factors of meaningfulness, organisational support and psychological safety had a statistically significant positive relationship with employee engagement. The data also shows that there are significant differences of the engagement level between age groups
