This research project aims to outline and define the function and significance of the Pauline language of the Cross as well as to delineate that, for Paul, Christ's abject death on the cross not only reveals something of Christ himself, but also unveils and enlightens aspects of the Church and its identity. Limiting the study's scope to the first letter to the Corinthians (and more precisely 1 Co 1-4) and to the Epistle to the Galatians (where the use of the terminology is particularly rich and dense), the thesis will demonstrate that the language of the cross is utilized to define the contour of Christian identity and solidly establish it in time.
