Billingham was shortlisted for the Turner Prize 2001 for his show at the Ikon Gallery Birmingham 2000. It was the most comprehensive exhibition of work by the artist up to the year 2000 and constituted an intimate portrait of the artist’s life and close observations of the world around him. It included photographs from the award -winning series of family portraits (1990-1996), earlier black-and-white family photographs (1990-1991), a new series of urban landscapes (1992-1997) as well as video stills and four short video pieces: Ray in Bed (1999), Playstation (1999), Liz Smoking (1998) and Tony Smoking Backwards (1998).
