The global economic and political order that was created in the aftermath of World War II –an order that has been of enormous benefit to the entire world-- is under attack by President Trump. That order has provided conditions for the enormous growth of emerging markets and the moving out of poverty of hundreds of millions of people. That order is supported now by an effective set of institutions that, even if they could not have been created without US engagement, institutions have taken on a life of their own.
