Mindfulness training for Air Force Nurse Residents

The purpose of this EBP pilot project was to implement a mindfulness-based stress reduction technique with Air Force nurse residents via a smartphone using the Headspace mindfulness training application. Design: A pre-test/post-test intervention feasibility project. Methods: Each participant (n = 7) completed a Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Mindful Awareness Attention scale (MAAS) before, at the end of the project and 30 days post-project completion. The nurse residents participated in meditation for five minutes at the start of each shift by listening to the guided audio file entitled Reset on Headspace. The study was completed over a 30-day period. Results: A Wilcoxon Signed Rank Sum Test did not reveal statistical improvement in stress; mindful awareness or resilience. Conclusion: Although there were no statistical improvements the project did prove to be feasible and is recommended for retest using a more extended period of study.
