Overcoming intimate partner violence (IPV) is an important component of the Sustainable Goal 5 dedicated to the improvement of gender equality globally. Historically, the field of gender and development has emphasised cultural, social constructionist and feminist theorisations and aetiologies of IPV, which have consistently universalised gender hierarchies and appraised cultural or institutional parameters (including institutionalized religious traditions) as loci of female subordination contributing to women’s abuse.
