Hur finner elever trygghet i en ny miljö?

The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze and understand how students who are new to a school can experience security in both the physical and social environment, and preserve and / or build up their internal security. Initially and to get an understanding of the subject, national guidelines and advices were reviewed together with literature studies in the subjects of security, learning, group processes and basic human needs. A hermeneutic approach was held as a perspective throughout the study, particularly during the analytical and interpretive stage. Qualitative interviews were conducted with three pupils of mixed ages in grades 1-5. It turned out that the pupils had needs of security in a new environment and the security is mainly found in peers of similar ages. One of the pupils felt security by looking around and become familiar with the environment during the first couple of days. High noise levels and messy social environment could have negative impact on security for some of the pupils. Seating and room size could also affect the feeling of security. The internal security proved to be a valuable help to find their way in the new environment and a stable internal security before moving to a new school, increased the chances to adapt smoothly to the new.
