To minimise restricted capital is desirable in all businesses; this also applies to Volvo Aero Corporation, VAC. In order to reduce restricted capital the Department of Inventory Logistics wants to enhance the understanding of inventory to production, according to their metrics and ABC classes. The following metrics is in use by VAC; working capital, turnover, delivery performance and service quality. The purpose of this paper is to increase understanding of inventory to production at VAC, Trollhättan, considering metrics and ABC-classes. In addition to this, the paper aims to present proposals for approaches at VAC to reduce restricted capital. This paper has been completed using the Six Sigma methodology and the tool DMAIC. This tool addresses problems in a dual approach. As a first step, the tool breaks down the key variable, in this case the restricted capital, into sub-variables, which are all parts of the result. As a second step these parts are broken down further in order to identify what effects them, and in extension, the key variables. This paper is structured by these two key areas, the parts, Handling of the materials, which is processed data for materials and the various measurements and metrics, and the Influencing factors, where the focus is on what effects the inventory levels. The total restricted capital in inventory to production is today at nearly double the target Because of this, turnover is low, about half of target value. VAC has a good service level to production even thou delivery precision from vendors is far from target values To enhance the understanding of inventory to production and the relation between the metrics the author classified the materials into groups of high and low values for the metrics. This results in eight groups of high and low values of the different matrices. 60% of the total restricted capital occurs in the group with low turnover and high service level. Materials with such conditions can also be described as material is available when needed but it is a part of the inventory for too long. Here is an obvious opportunity to reduce the inventory levels and with that also the restricted capital. However, it is important to perform close e follow ups as lack of material could lead d to higher costs then the cost of inventory. VAC ought to ensure improvement of performance of delivery by vendors, as this metric is the furthest from target value. Performance of delivery is important in order to allow VAC to lower their safety stock For variables that effect stock, supplier relationships, internal information, individuals and routines were identified.
