This paper has viewed the discourse analyses to investigate appropriate addiction treatments for opiate addiction through the lens of two ideologies; the12-step treatment and the medication-assisted treatment. The ideologies are separated by two basic assumptions. The 12-step treatment advocates complete sobriety whereas the medication-assisted treatment use narcotic drugs as treatment.The analysis is done through a discourse analyses with initial focus on Foucault and Fairclogh. The theory demonstrates that descriptions of reality are created through the use of rhetoric.
