Bellman i duschen : Påverkas jag som sångare av vilken musikhistorisk epok jag arbetar med?

This essay aims to investigate if, and if so in what way, I, as a singer, am affected by which epoch I am working with. In what way is my technique affected when I sing renaissance music? Do my expectations on e.g. romantic opera cause me to adopt a bad singing technique? Does singing baroque music make me a better singer? In order to find out I made five recordings of songs and arias from different epochs. I let four professional singers and/or singing teachers listen to these recordings, and then asked them to answer a short questionnaire with focus on mainly technique and expression. In some areas the respondents were more or less in agreement, whereas in others they were less so. They more or less agreed that there was no significant difference in technique between the five pieces. Still, I was able to detect interesting patterns and their answers gave me a better idea of why certain technical difficulties occur under certain circumstances. When it comes to expression, the results were less conclusive.
