Audio compression is receiving more and more research interest these days. Internet has put out a new demand for small-size, but high-quality audio formats, since the old CD format is not optimal for data transmission and storage due to its big size. Within the audio compression arena, the wavelet transform can be used to mimic the critical bands in the human hearing, or as a powerful technique for concentrating the signal energy on a few transform coefficients.
